Film and jazz lovers are welcomed to join the free virtual screening of the critically acclaimed documentary Body and Soul between Oct. 12 and 15. Participants must register online to view the film and discussion on it.
Presented by the Charleston Jewish Film Festival, Body and Soul was winner of the Best Music Documentary Award at the San Francisco Black Film Festival and is a portrayal of the complex musical interplay between African-American and Jewish cultures.
On Oct. 15 at 7pm viewers can tune into a free discussion regarding the cultural themes presented in the film and with the history of jazz music. The discussion will be mediated via Zoom by Ashley Walters, College of Charleston’s assistant professor of Jewish studies. Jazz composer, conductor and Ranky Tanky member Charlton Singleton and Karen Chandler, co-founder of the Charleston Jazz Initiative, will discuss Body and Soul and the importance of its contribution to the Jewish and African American music industry.
