The Charleston County Public Library announced that North Charleston librarian Sheila Heyward is the winner of the 2020 Cynthia Graham Hurd Staff Award. Heyward, who has over 30 years of experience with the county library system, oversees the collection at the Cooper River Memorial branch on Rivers Avenue.
The Cynthia Graham Hurd Staff Award, named after the longtime library employee who was killed in the Mother Emanuel AME shooting in 2016, is given to staff who show the same enthusiasm and dedication as Hurd.
Heyward recently helped lead an effort to put self-checkout scanners at her branch of the library. She is a notary public, and has also worked to show the importance of this library service, encouraging other employees to become certified notaries.
The award, now in its second year, was established by Hurd’s family and CCPL to celebrate her memory, while awarding staff. Last year’s winner was K’Lani Green.
