Roughly 800 Charleston County teachers were given the COVID-19 vaccine Tuesday. The county is attempting to vaccinate 2,000 teachers per week for the next three weeks.

The latest news is a welcome update for some local educators. Last week, amid the announcement of a new phase of COVID-19 vaccination, the Palmetto State Teacher’s Association lamented the lack of prioritization for teachers in the latest vaccination phase which began Monday.

“Vaccinating our educators will further mitigate the risk of transmission in schools, something that becomes more important as daily school enrollment increases with the shift away from hybrid instructional models,” the PTSA wrote in a press release.

Another 425 cases of COVID-19 were reported today, bringing the total to 451,026 across the state. Three deaths were counted due to the virus Tuesday.
