Best Club DJ
DJ Natty Heavy

After 14 years in Charleston, DJ Natty Heavy, aka Nate Lopes, can’t imagine being anywhere else. “I just love this city. The club scene has exploded,” he said. He’s always been well-rounded in music. “I’ll drop everything from Wu-Tang to Britney Spears to Bob Marley to Bob Dylan to Metallica to Nirvana. And then bring it back to Stevie Wonder. Then, you’ll hear 2Chainz after that. Right now, I’m researching a bunch of bluegrass songs so I can be a bluegrass DJ.”

He resists the idea that someone can’t like a certain style of music. “Every genre has the right song for you, you just have to find it.” To keep afloat during the shutdown, he’s been the official DJ for the Safe Sounds series launched by Mount Pleasant’s Ear for Music and doing Twitch streams and other collaborations. “But, mostly I’ve been raising my daughter,” he said. As of January this year, he hosts a daily morning show on the new radio station Old Skool 92.1 FM that delivers ‘80s and ‘90s throwbacks as well as hip-hop and R&B. “This year really has exploded for me—everything is back double time.”
