Five Loaves Cafe

Five Loaves Cafe has been serving up healthy fare focused on local and sustainable methods for over 18 years, and its unique twists on classic sandwiches and daily rotating specials keep City Paper readers hungry for more — so much so that the cafe took home four awards.

Owner Joe Fischbein credits Five Loaves’ chicken salad club for its “Best Gourmet Sandwich” win.

“Our chicken salad club is the best selling sandwich we have, and it’s been on the menu since we opened 18 years ago,” he said. “The recipe has not changed at all. What makes that sandwich a little bit special is the grapes inside to give it a little bit of sweetness. The bacon and avocado also kick it up a notch.”

For vegetarian options, Fischbein recommends the black bean burger or portobello goat cheese burger, and the Thai hot pot is another one of his personal favorites. Head to the Summerville location for Saturday or Sunday brunch when Fischbein recommends ordering chicken and waffles and a Bloody Mary garnished with tangy pickled okra.
