Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art
Originally named the Halsey Gallery for the artist William Halsey, a Charleston native whose modernist works were exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art and other notable art galleries, the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art hosts between five and seven exhibitions per year, highlighting adventurous contemporary art by emerging and mid-career artists of national stature.
“As a non-collecting museum, we create meaningful interactions between adventurous artists and diverse communities within a context that emphasizes the historical, social and cultural importance of the art of our time,” said associate director Lizz Biswell.
After a tumultuous year that brought unexpected challenges with even less expected calls for change, Halsey burst into 2021 with Geolocation, an exhibition that featured work by artistic duo Nate Larson and Marni Shindelman and two bodies of work that prompt questions on the dichotomies of text and image, digital and analog, and private and public. Not too far into the year, Halsey also brought on Katie Hirsch as its new director.
Though the year has already brought about great change, Halsey’s commitment to exhibiting innovative art is one thing that has remained solid.
