Best Local Theater Company
Theatre 99

Opened in 2000 by local comedians Brandy Sullivan and Greg Tavares, Theatre 99 is a staple in the Charleston comedy scene. With weekly improv shows and a rotating cast of comedians, you can always expect something different from each show. As with so many other businesses, Theatre 99 had a difficult year in 2020, but the group persevered, adjusting its offerings as the times changed by streaming shows, booking private performances and now offering limited capacity seating. “Just like with everything we’ve done, it’s kind of unfolded as we’ve gone,” said co-founder Brandy Sullivan. “We eventually went back to doing live shows, but we’re still doing shows for 40 people in our 130-seat space. So, it’s a slow return, but there’s a lot of joy in getting to do it.”
