Best Green Business
Vertical Roots

No longer the new kid on the block when it comes to Charleston’s agricultural scene, Vertical Roots’ driving goal of delivering local, hydroponically farmed produce to the region is reality. You can now find multiple Vertical Roots lettuce varieties in over 400 stores throughout the Southeast.

Their methods of growing produce had long been dubbed the “gardening of the future,” but the group has brought the future to us a bit early with their soil-less growth. It’s roughly 95% more efficient than traditional gardening, said general manager Andrew Hare.

While its Columbia location boasts the organization’s largest farm site, with 108 shipping containers growing leafy greens 365 days a year, the Charleston-based business has planted itself firmly in the Lowcountry.

Charleston County Schools is a recent partner, serving Vertical Roots’ lettuce to students and supporting local agricultural programs in schools.
