What you need to know: South Carolina’s COVID case numbers continue to decline two weeks after federal officials significantly rolled back mask-wearing guidelines for vaccinated people.
Two weeks has been the general guideline for determining whether a specific event like a holiday or change in policy has led to an increase or decrease in case numbers.
South Carolina’s director of public health, Brannon Traxler, said Wednesday that the data shows there’s been no meaningful backtracking in cases since the mask guidelines changed May 13, meaning the new guidelines are likely here to stay.

South Carolina health officials reported 408 total cases of the coronavirus on Friday (257 confirmed, 151 probable), with 10 confirmed deaths.
With 13,016 tests reported Friday, 2.9% were positive.

Total positive cases in Charleston County: 43,757
Total positive cases in Berkeley County: 17,872
Total positive cases in Dorchester County: 18,189
Deaths in S.C. from COVID-19: 8,563 (+10)
