Charleston-based hip-hop artist Mister Davey Jones released a new single, “Let it Breathe,” on Aug. 27. The track exemplifies Jones’ skill for combining elements of both hip-hop and jazz in a fresh, compelling way.
“Let it Breathe” feels like an exhale. It’s an arrangement composed of electric piano, a smooth bass line and finger-tapping percussion. Jones’ deep, soulful voice delivers the chorus: “Relax and let it breathe.”
The song saw its beginnings as Jones made his way home after a particularly grueling day of work. “I come up with a lot of things just riding around the city — I’ll take my voice recorder, and I’ll come up with melodies,” Jones said.
“Let it Breathe” centers around the idea of focusing on the simplest of acts, breathing — an especially apt reminder during times of stress and sorrow throughout the COVID-19 crisis.
“I lost a lot of people between last year and this year,” he said. After an incredibly difficult year, he is attempting to release the dark, heavy energy and share some lightness. “I just want to convey positivity.”
Listeners can expect more singles from the up-and-coming artist, as well as a 10-song project with all new tracks that will be released later this year. Fans can catch Mister Davey Jones sharing his tunes live at open mic nights around Charleston.
