Hobcaw Brewing Company will celebrate its first anniversary with an all-day shindig Saturday. Look for treats from Little Peanut Pastries, brisket from Palmira Barbecue, shaved ice from Pelican’s Snoballs trailer, a bouncy castle for the kids, live music from Sexbruise? musician Julie Slonecki and three new beers on tap, co-owner Chris Mottram told the City Paper.
The party marks the end of a successful, yet tumultuous, year for Mottram and the brewery. According to Mottram, who co-owns the brewery with his wife Tiffany, Hobcaw was initially slated to open at the start of 2020, but construction and permit delays pushed its debut to September.
“At the time before COVID when we were going through so many delays, it was really frustrating because we thought we would be open really early in 2020,” said Mottram, commenting on what allowed the brewery to succeed while opening in the midst of a pandemic. “Aside from the fact that I think we make pretty good beer, the big thing for us was the huge outdoor area we have.”
“When we were looking at locations, that was the No. 1 thing we were looking for,” he said, adding he visited 20-plus locations before deciding on 496 Long Point Road in Mount Pleasant. “With COVID, it really paid off then. That was the main key to us being successful through 2020.”
Having some of the area’s top food pop-ups visit the brewery on a regular basis has also drawn big crowds. Palmira, Sap Lai, High Pie and Victor’s Lab stop by monthly, and “from now until infinity,” Blackout Burger will be on the patio every Thursday from 5-8 p.m.
Moving forward, Mottram plans to expand the taproom and get into distribution. In the immediate future, guests can check out Hobcaw’s three newest beers Saturday — a New England IPA, smoked rye lager and Baltic porter.
