Deep Crates Charleston is a monthly meetup organized by local DJs Thematik and Mosaic to bring together vinyl record collectors and music fans to nerd out over their favorite tunes.

The event is held the first Friday of every month at Tin Roof West Ashley and features local and regional DJs, vinyl collectors, record vendors, producers and local dance crews Dancing On Air, Hipnotik BodyRock and The Bronx Boys.

“I never know what to expect of the night,” DJ Thematik said. “We don’t tell people what to bring or what to play. This next one is going to be called the Old School Edition because everybody playing has been involved in the scene for over two decades. You can expect a mix of funk, soul and old-school hip-hop. And it’s always all vinyl.”

This Friday’s Deep Crates kicks off at 8 p.m. and costs $5 at the door. DJ Tuff Girl, DJ Jade Maroon and guest record vendor Jesse Lockman of Loose Joints Records will be on hand.

Thematik has been an avid vinyl collector even longer than he’s been a DJ, and Deep Crates sprang from an event held for his 45th birthday where the only music spun was on old 45 records.

“We had a really good turn out,” he said. “It just kind of lit a fire beneath us. And rather than just making it all 45s, we opened it up to all vinyl.”

The first Deep Crates of 2022, on Jan. 7, will feature local DJs Akfool and Bird Flu. Thematik is also working on developing a record swap event in the future, so stay tuned.
