For everyone who made exercise and health living their new year’s resolution, Charleston Animal Society (CAS) and Roper St. Francis’ new Couch to 5K Program is the perfect way to get ready for the upcoming Paws in the Park 5K. The bonus? Your pets can participate too.
Athletic trainers from Roper St. Francis collaborated with CAS and Animal Planet pet behavior expert and celebrity dog trainer Travis Brorsen to create an exercise program for people (and their pets) to get into shape.
The six- or eight-week self-guided program includes video training and downloadable guides available at paws.charlestonanimalsociety.org. The newly designed program is part of CAS’s Celebrity Paws in the Park 5K presented by Crews Subaru, which takes place March 19 at Riverfront Park.
Video segments are broken down into “overview,” “people” and “dog,” so you and your furry friend can learn how to prepare and develop a 5K training program that works for you.
“This training series guides even novice pet owners on how to select the right collar and leash, provide proper food and hydration, and train dogs to be safe and fun exercise partners,” Brorsen said in a press release. “Our goal in creating the video series was to provide a fun and easy tool where people working with their dogs can get fit together with the goal of participating in the 5K fun run or walk for Celebrity Paws in the Park on March 19 at Riverfront Park in North Charleston.”
Locals are already getting involved — Live 5 News meteorologist Joey Sovine is participating in the video series and the training program.
During the March 19 5K fun run or walk, participants and their dogs can enter the race with their dog and enjoy the activity zones: Hill’s Pet Nutrition Adoption Zone, the Canine Sports Arena with Dock Dogs® diving competitions and a pet health and wellness zone.
Brorsen will headline the event with his “Travis & Friends” stage where he’ll lead fun educational segments on animals and teach kids how to interact with dogs.
