Local singer/guitarist Bennett Coleman’s debut single, “Nothing To Do With Me,” is one of those upbeat songs with sad lyrics, a cross between country rock and soulful Americana.

“I wrote about the situation that everybody goes through being in a relationship — someone acts a certain way and you don’t realize the negative toxicity that person has until it’s too late, but then you decide to distance yourself from them and move forward,” Coleman said.

He had been playing around Charleston for about seven years in a three-piece he put together called The Rescue Blues before he signed on as a touring musician with country pop artist Warrick McZeke in 2018.

“I started playing these big festival circuits, and it ignited the passion I’ve always had but didn’t think to push for,” he said. “I have about 15 originals I’ve written, and slowly but surely I’m getting into recording all the singles and making everything happen.”

Coleman recorded all the vocals and instrumentation heard on “Nothing To Do With Me,” and Brian Jarvis of Midnight City Band produced the new song at his studio Anchor + Pine in North Charleston.

Coleman’s second single, “Too Fast For This Town,” will drop Feb. 6 and the single release party will be at Port of Call on Market Street downtown Feb. 15, 6-9 p.m.
