Tickets are now on sale for Spoleto Festival USA’s 2022 season. And with that announcement also comes the reveal of the principal theater offering, The Approach, which will run for 14 performances at the historic Dock Street Theatre.

When the 2022 season was previously announced on February 11, the title of the main theater piece was held back, a departure from previous years.

The Approach was originally developed for Landmark Productions — one of Ireland’s leading theatre producers — by writer and director Mark O’Rowe. The Approach premiered in Dublin at Projects Arts Centre in 2018, and was live-streamed in 2021.

The play is a conversation piece between three characters: Anna (played by Aisling O’Sullivan), Cora (Catherine Walker), and Denise (Derbhle Crotty). The conversations reveal a game of survival, relationships and betrayal being played out between these three women.

While Catherine Walker joins the cast for this production, O’Sullivan and Crotty are reprising the roles they originated in 2018. The show was met with a wealth of critical acclaim: with the original 2018 production praised by The Observer for featuring “breathtaking performances.” Even through a computer screen, which can be difficult for some audiences to appreciate or connect to, the show was lauded by both The Guardian and The New York Times.

The Approach opens May 26 with a preview performance and will run through the 31st, with further dates June 2, June 4-5, and June 7-12. The Festival’s Conversations With series will host O’Rowe and the cast of The Approach on May 30 in a conversation conducted by CBS News correspondent Martha Teichner.

The announcement of The Approach coincides with the opening of ticket sales for the 2022 season. Ticket sales begin at 10 a.m. EST on Feb. 22. The Approach is part of a stellar lineup that includes 124 performances featuring more than 70 international artists. It’s also one of almost a dozen world and U.S. premieres that make up this year’s festival.

Tickets are available starting at 10 a.m. EST on spoletousa.org or by calling 843-579-3100.
