Thirteen two-person crews from six countries are set to begin the 7th leg of the exciting, 1,000-mile catamaran Worrell 1000 race at 10 a.m. Monday morning in front of the Tides Hotel in Folly Beach.

Follyโ€™s local businesses will host the competitors and event staff during their night on the island as they prepare to sail to their next stop in the morning. Plan to arrive early to find parking and get a good spot on the beach to watch the race begin.

The race is approaching its 50th anniversary after an unlikely origin story involving a bar bet between brothers Michael and Chris Worrell in 1974. Catamarans sail consistently in the spectator-friendly checkpoint-to-checkpoint race. This yearโ€™s even will conclude in Virginia Beach with a formal awards banquet held with a program honoring Ron Anthony, a Worrell competitor and prior champion who died in a plane crash in 1983.

The winning team will also be honored with a Championโ€™s Perpetual Trophy, and another chosen competitor will receive a sportsmanship award named for Worrell alumna and fallen sailor Sandra Tartaglino.
