Tuesday’s primary election saw some former President Donald Trump-backed GOP candidates advance to the next round of voting in November, toppling longtime incumbents like U.S. Rep. Tom Rice, who previously voted in favor of Trump’s impeachment. Other races, however, like the high-profile S.C.-1 election saw Trump’s favored candidate Katie Arrington fall short against incumbent U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace, whose endorsement from former S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley may have given her the edge needed to come out on top.
More than 100,000 casted their ballots early, thanks to a change in election law that allowed for no-excuse voting ahead of election day, according to the S.C. Election Commission. DHEC reports more than 10,000 new cases of Covid-19, 5 deaths on Tuesday. State health officials on Tuesday reported 10,035 total new cases of Covid-19 — an increase over last week’s 8,913 — and four total new deaths, compared to last week’s two. U.S. failed to stop fraud in Covid loan program, Clyburn says.
