LAST WEEK’S MYSTERY, “Churchy?” showed the Knights of Columbus Hall at 143 Calhoun St., just across from Marion Square in Charleston. Hats off to North Charleston’s Alison Parker for being the eighth correct guess and winning this week’s swag.
Veteran mystery sleuth Allan Peel of San Antonio, Texas, tells us the brick Gothic-style building built in 1907 “houses the Charleston Chapter of the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic men’s fraternal order dedicated to charitable causes. In 1923, the building served as the venue for a speech by the Irish leader Eamonn DeValera, later the first president of the Irish Republic. In 1947, a fire gutted the upper story but repairs were made allowing the building to continue serving the Knights of Columbus ever since.”
