Rapid freezing temperatures across the Deep South in states like Mississippi and South Carolina created major water system issues. The cold temperatures reduced water pressure significantly, leaving many with little to no water. Multiple crews in affected states have spent days trying to fix the infrastructure.
Laura Clifton, communications coordinator for Charleston Water System, said customers in the Lowcountry were using in total nearly 100 million gallons of water a day, creeping toward the 105-million-gallon threshold that would trigger a boil water notice, according to WCSC TV. However, Charleston Water System workers and plumbers worked in freezing temperatures over the holiday weekend to help customers across the city fix burst or leaking pipes.
Meanwhile, temperatures in Charleston will rise today to 59 degrees, before dropping tonight to 41 degrees, according to forecasters. By New Year’s Eve, mild temperatures – and some rain – will be back with high temperatures in the upper 60s.
