One of the two scheduled shipping services plans to move its operations to another part of the Port of Charleston at the end of January as the threat of legal action has pushed it away from the new $1 billion Leatherman Terminal in North Charleston.
The Hapag-Lloyd container line, part of the U.S. Maritime Alliance consortium, will reroute to the Wando Welch Terminal in Mount Pleasant next month, according to published reports. The service formerly used the Leatherman Terminal for the past two years. The decision to split from Leatherman Terminal comes after a national labor board ruling that all work at the Leatherman Terminal must be done by members of the International Longshoremen’s Association dockworkers union. The port has said it will appeal the ruling.
“We expect this situation to be temporary as we work towards a solution,” S.C. Ports Authority spokeswoman Liz Crumley told The Post and Courier. “Regardless of the current NLRB [National Labor Relations Board] decision, S.C. ports remains hopeful that we can work with the ILA to achieve a solution that will allow for full utilization of the Leatherman Terminal and preservation of the growth trajectory our port has experienced that creates more jobs for both S.C. ports employees and ILA members.”
