Eight drag queens compete for the title of drag Entertainer of the Year (EOY) Sunday during the Palmetto Regional pageant at Queen Street Playhouse. The winner will go on to compete in the national competition.

The competing queens will take to the stage in four categories: creative presentation, creative evening wear, Q&A and talent.

Local drag legend Patti O’Furniture emcees the event.

“I’m honored to be the host and the emcee of the pageant,” O’Furniture told the City Paper. “We have so many amazing, talented local drag queens, and Charleston has such a great drag community. I hope this pageant will help celebrate these queens.”

This is the first year that South Carolina hosts a preliminary pageant for Entertainer of the Year, an event that has existed for more than 20 years.

“I am excited to showcase our local talent, and hopefully let the country see that we have some amazing entertainers in the Charleston area,” O’Furniture said. “Hopefully one of our local girls goes all the way to nationals this year and brings that crown home to South Carolina!”

The pageant also features performances by RuPaul’s Drag Race All-Star season 4 winner, Trinity the Tuck and past National Entertainer of the Year winners, Buff Faye (2014) and Shontelle Sparkles (2022).

“I’m excited to bring entertainers like Trinity, and the current national EOY title holder, Shontelle Sparkles, and former national title holder (and my good friend), Buff Faye to the stage,” O’Furniture said. “It’s exciting that they are coming to Charleston to perform, and that Charleston folks can see some out of town talent of that caliber, along with our talented local queens who will be competing.

“The fact that it’s at Queen Street Playhouse, a historic and beautiful theater in the heart of downtown Charleston, the production value is gonna be through the roof,” she said.

What can viewers expect at this event?

“The name says it all,” O’Furniture said. “They are competing for Entertainer of the Year. The purpose is to go on stage and entertain us — so you’ll see lots of creativity. To see what they’re gonna bring to the stage, it’s gonna be awesome.”

General admission is $20 and VIP tickets are $40. VIP tickets include reserved seating within the first six rows and a meet and greet with Trinity the Tuck, Shontelle Sparkles and Buff Faye. The event starts at 7 p.m. for general admission. Doors open at 5:45 p.m. for VIP ticket holders.
