Local nonprofit Water Mission invites community members to North Charleston’s Riverfront Park tomorrow for its 17th annual Walk for Water fundraiser.
Participants can choose to walk individually or as part of a team. The goal of the event is to raise funds and awareness for the ongoing global water crisis, which has left more than 2 billion people around the world without access to safe, clean drinking water.
The money raised will help the organization provide accessible safe water options for people in need.
Water Mission, which was started in 2001, is a Christian engineering nonprofit that builds sustainable safe water solutions for people residing in developing countries, disaster areas and refugee camps. To date, the Charleston-based organization has helped over 7 million people across 57 different countries.
The upcoming Walk for Water event is open to residents of all ages, including youths and children, and takes place from 9 a.m. to noon. The walk begins at Riverfront Park, 1061 Everglades Ave.
“I teach at Summerville High School and have a program called Effective Leadership,” said Teal Miller, a local teacher. “We like to make an impact in our local community, as well as the world as a whole. I really feel like it’s important for students to understand that they individually can make an impact on the entire world. By doing this experience, I really feel like it shows them that … together with lots of others, we can help bring fresh water to people all over.”
Registration costs are $25 for adults, $10 for youth and free for children ages four and under.
