Hundreds of people on flights to and from Charleston faced flight delays Wednesday night after a passenger allegedly threatened others with a bomb at Charleston International Airport, authorities said. At least eight flights were delayed.

Police arrested a 38-year-old San Diego man and charged him with threatened or attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction for an act of terrorism, according to police reports. The suspect was being held Thursday at Charleston County Detention Center on a $1 million bond. Threatening the use of a mass destruction weapon to further terrorism carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years in prison upon conviction.

The suspect reportedly told two people before boarding a plane that he had multiple bombs, according to media reports. One of the passengers notified a flight attendant, who notified Charleston County Aviation Police. No weapons or explosives were found in the suspect’s luggage.
