Saturday is officially Earth Day, an annual celebration that honors conservation achievements and raises awareness of environmental issues. Area advocates say they’re envious it’s going to be so green this weekend with several Earth Day events happening around town.
“We fight every day for resilient communities; for clean air, clean water, and clean energy; for responsible development; for healthy food and local farmers; and — most importantly — for the people like you who live in and love this special place,” said Faith Rivers James, executive director of Coastal Conservation League in a recent newsletter.
Here’s a rundown of Earth Day events taking place in the Charleston area this week:
The Greenest Day: An Earth and Arbor Day Celebration
Celebrate sustainability with live music and local food. Learn about local nonprofits, businesses and farmers working towards a more sustainable future at the Medical University of South Carolina this week. The festivities will also include door prize raffle tickets for all attendees.

Care for Gadsden Creek Community Cleanup
The South Carolina Environmental Law Project is hosting a community cleanup of Gadsden Creek to celebrate Earth Day. Charleston vocalist and performing artist, Ann Caldwell will kick off the event. Be sure to wear closed-toed shoes and bring your own water bottle. All cleanup materials will be provided by the South Carolina Aquarium.

Waylyn Community Earth Day Cleanup
Join Waylyn Heart Team’s (WHT) monthly neighborhood cleanup the second Saturday of every month. This Saturday, WHT partners with Waylyn Neighborhood Association for an Earth Day Waylynn Community Cleanup. Water, gloves and light snacks will be provided.

Sullivan’s Island Maritime Forest Nature Walk
Discover the nature that surrounds us during a guided nature walk through Sullivan’s Island Nature Trail led by Sullivan’s Island For All. Join biologist, ethnobotanist and herbalist April Punsalan as she introduces a variety of plants in the maritime forest that have medicinal value. Make sure to bring a water bottle, bug spray and clothing suitable for walking on uneven terrain. This event is limited to 20 people and a signed liability waiver will be required to participate.

Drink Beer. Save Turtles. Earth Week Celebration
Holy City Brewing is partnering with Turtle Survival Alliance (TSA) to drink beer, save turtles and, of course, celebrate Earth Day. Meet turtles and tortoises up close and learn about how TSA works to prevent species extinction.

Earth Day Celebration
Head to Tradesman Brewing Co. this Earth Day to learn about look businesses and groups are doing to help the environment and community. Purchase some edible plants for your garden or native plants for your flower beds. There will be a grocery tent, a pot painting station and the opportunity to make your own terrarium.

North Charleston Blue Crab Festival
The inaugural North Charleston Blue Crab Festival takes place at the Jenkins Youth and Family Village in North Charleston from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. this Saturday. The family friendly event features crabs served by the bucket, food trucks, live music, a DJ and a kids play area. Proceeds from ticket sales benefit the Jenkins Orphanage.General admission tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Kids 12 and younger are free.

Black Food Truck Festival
Support Black businesses and culture at the Black Food Truck Festival featuring diverse cuisine, live music and family-friendly activities. Last year’s debut festival drew more than 15,000 people and generated more than $1 million in support of Black-owned businesses. Food trucks will feature Southern, soul and creole cuisine — and everything in between.

Brunch in the Park
Listen to live music by local band Porto Seguro while enjoying a charcuterie or brunch board from Coastal Charcuterie and toast with a glass of bubbly from Graft Wine Shop. Bring your chairs and blankets to relax in the park while sipping beer and wine available for purchase, or bring your furry friend along (on a leash) to enjoy the day too. Food is available for pre-order from Coastal Charcuterie. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door. Children 12 and younger are free. All proceeds from this event support the Charleston Parks Conservancy.
