Heat advisories are expected across the state today as hot, humid weather continues to cause the Palmetto State to sizzle. The National Weather Service predicted heat indexes of up to 112 degrees in Charleston and Berkeley counties, issuing a heat advisory from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday.

Berkeley County nonprofit Project Love RDBNK is opening a cooling center at 133 Red Bank Road from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m today. It will provide movies, board games, coloring sheets and cold water for the homeless, those who work outside or those who donโ€™t have access to working air-conditioning.

As the heat is expected to continue through the weekend, S.C. Rep. Wendell Gilliard, D-S.C., and other Lowcountry leaders are hosting an emergency air conditioner giveaway July 22 at the Lowes off of Glenn McConnell in West Ashley. Air conditioners will be given out to the first 135 cars in line.

Officials say they’re also seeing an increase in heat-related medical conditions. Symptoms to recognize illnesses include dizziness, weakness, headache, nausea and heavy sweating.

โ€œWhen you know that youโ€™re starting to feel any signs or symptoms, find access to other things such as cold blankets or towels you can apply to the skin, getting to a place where thereโ€™s a fan [or] air conditioning,โ€ said Dr. Charlotte Collins of the Medical University of South Carolina.
