All of South Carolina’s Republican members of the U.S. House voted to protect New York Rep. George Santos, who was expelled Friday in a bipartisan vote. He faces a 23-count federal indictment on a variety of ethics-related charges.
Those voting to not expel Santos included U.S. Reps. Nancy Mace (SC-1), Joe Wilson (SC-2), Ralph Norman (SC-3), William Timmons (SC-4), Ralph Norman (SC-5) and Russell Fry (SC-7). Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn, SC-6, was the only member of the delegation to vote to oust Santos.
Business Insider decried Mace’s vote as a flip-flop. In January, Isle of Palms resident told the publication she was not going to “have anything to do with somebody that can’t be trusted, and clearly defrauded the voters of New York. He literally pulled the wool over everybody’s eyes.”
But on Friday, Mace, who has taken a harder right on positions in recent months, voted against the expulsion. She reportedly said in a statement, “George Santos is an ass, who, like every other American, deserves the presumption of innocence until proven guilty in a court of law. Charges are not a conviction. Today’s vote was not about accountability, which should have been in the hands of the courts and the people of NY-03. This was about shifting the balance of power in Congress, and I won’t play those games.”
