Today marks a historic day in North Charleston as a new mayor will be sworn in for the fourth time in the city’s history and first time in nearly 30 years. Former Police Chief Reggie Burgess, who swept into office in November by garnering 59% of votes among 10 candidates, will be sworn in at 6 p.m. tonight at the Charleston Area Convention Center as the city’s first African American mayor.
Burgess retired as chief of the North Charleston Police Department earlier in 2023 to focus on his mayoral campaign after the city’s longtime mayor, Keith Summey, announced he would not seek another term in office.
Media coach Tammy McCottry will host the inauguration ceremony. The program will also include the posting of the colors from the North Charleston Fire Department, an Invocation by Dr. Isaac Holt Jr. of Royal Missionary Baptist Church, and the swearing-in of council members by Municipal Judge Mel Coleman.
