Former S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley, who many thought would edge Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for second place in Monday night’s Iowa caucuses, faced a different result. DeSantis narrowly won second by nabbing 21% of the vote, compared to Haley’s 19%. Frontrunner Donald Trump steamrolled to a win with 51% of the vote.
For Haley on Monday, maybe lower-than-expected results were due to the icy cold weather. Maybe it was DeSantis’s heavy campaigning in Iowa. Maybe it was the amount of time she spent campaigning in New Hampshire instead of Iowa. Nevertheless, Haley declared her competitive placement with DeSantis, who hasn’t campaigned much in New Hampshire, transforms the GOP presidential contest: “I can safely say tonight Iowa made this Republican primary a two-person race,” she said Monday night. The New Hampshire primary is next Tuesday.
