Early this morning, the tiny resort town of Dixville Notch, N.H., became the first town to report New Hampshire primary results — 6 votes for former S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley and zero for former President Donald Trump.
Haley is seen as the last barrier to Trump winning the GOP presidential nomination for the third time after 10 other challengers dropped out of the race in recent months. Recent polls showed Haley behind, but with momentum. She says she’ll be in North Charleston Wednesday for a rally and a month-long $4 million media blitz of the Palmetto State.
As an interesting sidenote, the late U.S. Sen. Fritz Hollings, D-S.C., took the presidential primary vote in the Democratic primary in Dixville Notch 40 years ago by getting three votes (43%), one more than the late Vice President Walter Mondale out of seven votes cast. Hollings also got five votes in the 1984 Republican primary in Dixville Notch โ 10 fewer than GOP President Ronald Reagan.
Meanwhile in South Carolina, early voting is currently underway for the stateโs official first-in-the-nation Democratic presidential primary. There is not an official Democratic primary in New Hampshire this week, but New Hampshire is offering an unofficial Democratic primary today. South Carolina will also be the first state to have President Joe Biden on a ballot.
