There is little doubt who will win South Carolina’s Democratic presidential primary next month. And despite the best efforts by former Gov. Nikki Haley, there is equally little doubt about who will win our state’s Republican primary, too.
This is an election between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. That’s why South Carolinians should not only vote to re-elect President Joe Biden in November, but also in our February 3rd Democratic presidential primary.
This year, for the first time, South Carolina’s Democratic presidential contest will be our party’s first in the nation. That is a rare and distinct honor which has been earned over decades. Since 1992, every winner of the South Carolina Democratic primary has made it onto the national Democratic ticket. That’s a record of success that no other early-voting state can boast in either party. We make presidents here, and national leaders know it. The diverse racial, religious and ideological makeup of our state’s Democratic electorate is a microcosm of our national party and our country.
A strong Democratic turnout in our presidential primary this year, and a resounding victory for Joe Biden, will help cement South Carolina’s place atop Democratic presidential election cycles for years to come. More importantly for this year, it will build strong momentum for the only candidate with a realistic chance of stopping a Trump return to power: President Joe Biden.
Aside from the political process considerations, and the specter of an increasingly dangerous Donald Trump, the Biden-Harris Administration’s strong record of tangible accomplishments warrants the vote of every South Carolinian. They have prioritized and enacted major legislation to build infrastructure, fight climate change, grow our economy and reduce costs of health care and education. It is a more substantive, meaningful and mainstream record than any president’s who has sought reelection in a generation.
On Feb. 3, South Carolinians can keep our voices strong by voting in the Democratic presidential primary for an accomplished statesman and pragmatic leader who has actually stood up to Donald Trump before and won: President Joe Biden.
