MORNING NEWSBREAK | A new poll shows former Gov. Nikki Haley is closing the gap in the GOP presidential primary race with former President Donald Trump. The Emerson College Polling/The Hill poll puts Haley at 35% to Trump’s 58%. That’s about 10 points closer than she was last week in two polls.
Haley made an appeal in a weekend appearance, urging those who didn’t vote in the Feb. 3 Democratic primary to vote in the Republican one. Groups across the state are also pushing for Democrats and independents to vote against the former president in the Republican primary.
“If you can use your vote, you should try to damage the [former] president,” Robert Schwartz, co-founder of the left-leaning PrimaryPivot, said in media reports. “Keep Nikki Haley in this race so that she can continue to draw distinctions with him and so that he can continue to spend down resources. Our goal is not to help Nikki Haley win. It’s to help Nikki Haley survive.”
Meanwhile, Haley is planning to make several stops around the Lowcountry this week ahead of this weekend’s state Republican primary to close the gap even further between her and Trump.
The statewide GOP primary is Saturday. Haley’s campaign announced plans to rally voters in Georgetown, Myrtle Beach, Moncks Corner and Mount Pleasant in the next couple of days. Trump is expected Wednesday in Greenville and Friday in Winthrop.
