The Charleston Animal Society’s fifth annual Rescue Brew competition is now underway as it seeks 2024 spokespets during its year-long celebration of its 150th anniversary. A contest launch party is Sunday in North Charleston.

Nominations open through April 21. The nomination phase of the contest is now open. You can enter a photo of your dog and cat in the contest for a spokesdog and spokescat to be on the label of cans of Rescue Brew, which will be brewed this year by Commonhouse Aleworks in North Charleston.
Upload your favorite photo of your pet and tell us why your pet deserves to be the face of Rescue Brew. A $15 donation for each animal contestant is required for each entry. Each donation supports the lifesaving programs of Charleston Animal Society.
Sunday launch party. To help kick off the competition, you and your dog can attend a launch party from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Commonhouse Aleworks, 4831 O’Hear Ave., North Charleston. You will be able to enjoy some bluegrass music and beer. There also will be pet adoptions and a chance to get a perfect photo for your Rescue Brew pet entry.
“We are honored and grateful for the opportunity to brew Charleston Animal Society’s annual Rescue Brew this year,” said Commonhouse Aleworks’ Pearce Fleming. “This is a cause near and dear to the hearts of our entire team. We are excited to see the positive impact of this partnership come to fruition for the rescue animals in our community.”
Voting opens April 22. The real competition begins during the voting phase from April 22 to May 20. That’s when anyone can vote for favorites. Each $1 donation to a pet’s profile counts as one vote.
When voting ends, the top three vote-getters for cats and dogs will be named finalists. A panel of judges from sponsors will decide the winners in each category. Rescue Brew will go on sale this summer at Commonhouse Aleworks.
This year’s sponsors. Rescue Brew sponsors include: Commonhouse Aleworks, Live 5 News, 103.5 WEZL, Y102.5 and the Charleston City Paper.
In 2023, the animal society raised more than $82,000 in its fourth annual Rescue Brew competition when voters picked a tabby cat and a Bernedoodle as spokespets.
Since 1874, Charleston Animal Society has worked to prevent cruelty to animals. More than 15,000 animals will turn to Charleston Animal Society this year for care, compassion and hope. In addition to caring for homeless animals, adopting them into new homes and reuniting lost pets with their families, the organization responds to animals in crisis as a result of man-made and natural disasters.
Additionally, the society’s comprehensive shelter medicine program provides direct services for as many as 1,200 animals in its system of care at one time. Its veterinarians also spay or neuter upwards of 10,000 dogs and cats each year and they provide emergency medical services to critically ill and injured animals arriving at the shelter daily.
