MORNING HEADLINES | The S.C. Ethics Commission said Wednesday it has found probable cause in 76 different incidents to believe former Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill misused her position to enrich herself.
Hill, who resigned in March, received national publicity for being the clerk of court at convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh’s six-week trial in 2023. She co-wrote a book on her experiences as a court official.
One complaint alleges she provided a photograph of an inmate in a Colleton County Courthouse holding cell to promote the sale of a book and filmed a promotional segment for her book in her office at the courthouse, documents state.
Another complaint alleges she also directed hundreds – if not thousands – of dollars for “candy, tea and lemonade” for office parties. Other public money allegedly went for alcoholic drinks, dog food, dog bones and a dog bed.
The commission said ethics allegations against Hill would be aired publicly at a hearing at the State Ethics Commission in Columbia on Dec. 19. The hearing reportedly will have opening and closing statements and the introduction of evidence and witnesses.
