One positive from Debby: No more drought
MORNING NEWSBREAK | The untold buckets of rain that poured on the Palmetto State last week did at least one positive thing – it helped the state to emerge from a drought.
Three weeks ago, only one of the state’s 46 counties had normal rain levels, according to the S.C. State Climate Office. And this week? Some 38 of 46 counties were at normal rain levels, with the remaining eight in the northwest corner of South Carolina in “incipient,” or emerging, drought.
Meanwhile in Charleston, some area residents are concerned about another impact of the drenching storm – they say they’ve noticed running water in their homes has had a slightly yellow or brown color to it. Officials say people are seeing elevated levels of iron and manganese in the water and that it is safe to drink.

State nixed AP African American studies; Charleston to possibly offer honors version. Charleston County students still might be able to take an honors version of the Advanced Placement African American Studies course that the state Department of Education shut down in public schools across South Carolina.
Proposed Mount Pleasant subdivision would ruin the character of the area, opponents say. The Hamlin Acres Planned Development seeks to build 41 single-family homes on a roughly 13-acre parcel on Hamlin Road, but some community members see the development as a destruction of the town’s charm.
Charleston Co. deputies receive more than a dozen of reports of jail-related scams. Several incidents in which scammers are posing as bail bondsmen have been reported in Charleston, with scammers taking hundreds to thousands of dollars from family members trying to get their loved ones out of jail.
U.S. Army Corps to begin Breach Inlet project this weekend. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Charleston District will soon begin a project on Breach Inlet that has been in the works for over a year.
Pilot program aims to tackle affordable housing crisis in Charleston. Charleston County and the Charleston Redevelopment Corporation are launching a pilot program that supports land acquisition grants for qualifying groups. This includes nonprofit and for-profit agencies with previous experiences in affordable house building.
