MORNING NEWSBREAK | Charleston officials may be one step closer to an answer on the future of the former Piggly Wiggly site on Sumar Street in West Ashley following a Monday night meeting.
Charleston Mayor William Cogswell, along with redevelopment company Edens, proposed a $300 million plan for the long-discussed site, according to media reports.
“This is the first time that we’ve had a comprehensive plan, and it’s with a company that the Lowcountry knows,” said Councilman William Tinkler, who represents the city council district where the area is located.
The plan includes a public park, multi-use bike and pedestrian paths, along with new apartments, 10% of which will be designated as “affordable.” Developers said there would be an emphasis on including local businesses and restaurants.
The plan also includes a 400,000-square-foot stormwater retention system to help with flood mitigation throughout West Ashley.
“Right now, you’re sitting with 35 acres of asphalt that really has no retention whatsoever,” he said. “So, whenever it rains, all that drains down into the neighborhoods.”
