MORNING NEWSBREAK | The city of Charleston unveiled a new water action plan Tuesday night that focused on the future of flooding in the Holy City. The plan outlines strategies to tackle sea level rise, storm surges and heavy rainfall to help shape critical policy decisions, including zoning and stormwater manuals.
City officials held a workshop with water experts and local Charleston groups to outline flood prevention strategies, which Mayor William Cogswell said was “about living with water.”
Some of the suggestions during the meeting included tailoring policies and design solutions to each community, as well as educating and collaborating with the community. Also introduced at the meeting was the Basin Flood Action Program, which will divide the city into different areas to address specific flooding issues immediately.
“The more people that are educated by where the water goes in their backyard or out in the streets in front of them, the more informed they will be when there’s an issue,” the mayor said.
