MORNING NEWSBREAK | With six weeks until Novemberโs general election, U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C, is accusing Charleston County Sheriff Kristin Graziano of how she is handling immigration enforcement in the Lowcountry. But the Democratic sheriff replied Mace needed to stay in her own lane.
โCharleston County has been recognized as a non-cooperative institution by ICE,โ Mace wrote in a release Tuesday. โIn other words, you are purposefully and systematically allowing criminal illegal aliens to roam free in Charleston County and surrounding areas. You are purposefully putting local residents at risk, adults and children alike.โ
Graziano, who like Mace is running for reelection in November, immediately responded to the allegation, saying the congresswoman, whose district doesn’t include the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center, โnever misses an opportunity to entertain performative politics.โ
Mace claimed that on Aug. 23, the sheriffโs office refused to honor a federal immigration detainer request concerning โan illegal alienโ charged with two counts of criminal solicitation of a minor.
Charleston County Sheriffโs spokesperson Alexis Douglas said the sheriffโs office never received an order from a judge to hold anyone on Aug. 23, 2024.
โMace has a history of mischaracterizing events for her perceived political benefit, and this letter is particularly egregious,โ Graziano added. โI suggest that she turn her focus to the people of the Lowcountry and do what she does best โ whatever that may be. She needs to let our law enforcement professionals do their job.”
