Local bagel shop, Holey City Bagels, heads to Citi Field for New York’s BagelFest, the world’s “premiere bagel celebration,” on Sept. 28. If you’re willing to make the trek, tickets are still available.
This bagel industry trade and consumer show features over 40 bagel shops — and Holey City is the only participant from the Southeast.
The downtown bagel shop, located at 43 Cannon Street, opened in 2022 to great fanfare. At the time owner Greg Odachowski told Charleston City Paper that his shop was consistently selling out of its hand-rolled, water-boiled bagels: “I’ve been in the back on Google trying to figure out how to make more bagels!”
At BagelFest, Holey City will be competing against well-known bagel shops from around the world. Festival participants and experts sample each bagel and vote on their favorite in a variety of categories, from Best of the Fest to Most Creative to Schmear of the Year.

“We are so honored to be representing Charleston and the entire southeast at New York BagelFest on Saturday,” Odachowski said. “We would love to bring home an award, but it is enough for us to be there rubbing elbows with some of my bagel idols. I have been working on my recipe since I was just a farmers market stand in Marion Square, and we cannot wait to see how our bagels stack up.”
