MORNING NEWSBREAK  |  Hurricane Milton is expected to push a surge of water into low-lying areas of the South Carolina coast as the storm churns away in the Atlantic Ocean. Though the storm is forecast to weaken, impacts will be felt far from the storm’s center, according to The Weather Channel.

Meanwhile as Florida starts the recovery process after Milton blew through last night, Gov. Henry McMaster announced the Palmetto State would send National Guard troops to help with cleanup efforts.

Charleston Harbor is forecast to hit 7.8 feet above normal with the 2 p.m. high tide today. That would put the harbor just below the threshold of an 8-foot “major” flood stage, at which point many downtown roads become impassable, according to the National Weather Service.

The 3 p.m. afternoon high tide for Oct. 11 is expected to be around 7.5 feet, which is considered a “moderate” flood point for the harbor. During that stage, areas around the low-lying medical district are inundated with water, as are Market Street, East Bay Street, and portions of U.S. Highway 17 and S.C. Highway 61.

A tropical storm warning  is in effect for near-coastal waters along the southeast coast of the Palmetto State into the afternoon. Wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph are expected through the day.

The impacts that Milton brings are forecast to be fairly short-lived, according to the National Weather Service. Overall conditions are expected to begin improving later today.
