Popular, longstanding King Street tapas restaurant Barsa Tapas and Lounge today announced its imminent closure.
In an Instagram post the restaurant stated that its last service will be from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Dec. 21.
The post noted the restaurant, which has served up paella, patatas bravas and sangria for 14 years on the corner of Line and King streets will close and change ownership in 2025.
Barsa stated: “Thank you to our owner, Drazen (Romic). We are so happy that this holiday season you get the best gift ever, retirement!”
In 2011 when the restaurant opened, the City Paper reported that Romic “revamped the old Shine space on Line Street, stripping the metallic wallpapers, rebuilding the bar, and ripping out the uncomfortable banquettes. The swanky but awkward club vibe has been replaced with a cozy lounge feel.”
At the time, he said, “I didn’t feel comfortable about the whole look. I had to do it because I want people to feel good.”
The menu concept was classic Spanish tapas. By February 2011, the restaurant was offering two kinds of tapas every Monday: “Duck and mushroom or seafood. There will be three sizes: an 8-inch pan for one to two guests, a 13-inch for three to four, and a 15-inch pan for five to six. The dish is from the Valencia region of Spain and was traditionally cooked in a paellera over an open fire.”
