MORNING HEADLINES  | People along the South Carolina coast got a couple of inches of snow Tuesday night, making for roads that officials say may be pretty hazardous — especially for drivers not used to ice. They’re warning drivers to keep off of roadways. Another two inches may come today, forecasters say.

In an email message subtitled “no yahoos,” Charleston officials urged “residents to avoid traveling if possible.” They said barricades are in place on roads across the city to allow snow plows to clear the streets and make them safe..

Several bridges closed overnight during the winter storm. As of 8:30 a.m. today, the Ashley River bridges and Ravenel Bridge remained closed, although snow plows were seen working on the bridge.

Government offices, schools and air travel have also been halted due to the snowy weather.  The airfield and control tower at Charleston International Airport were also closed due to hazardous conditions caused by the winter storm. Charleston County Schools shifted to eLearning and remote work today. All school and district buildings are closed for the day. City of Charleston offices also are closed today with public meetings to be rescheduled. No garbage collection will occur today, but it will resume Thursday pending road conditions.

The Lowcountry’s big snow day (see more pictures here) was part of a major winter storm that slammed Texas and blanketed the northern Gulf Coast with record-breaking snow that moved east overnight, spreading heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain across parts of the Florida Panhandle, Georgia and eastern Carolinas.
