MORNING HEADLINES  | Motorists who insist on driving on Charleston-area and state roadways today face a big danger from almost invisible black ice caused by melting ice and snow that refroze overnight.

Officials across the state are emphasizing the danger on roadways, particularly in shady areas that don’t get sunshine.  Other officials are encouraging workers to stay home again today.  Schools and governments across the Lowcountry have announced cancellations and closures.

As of 8 a.m., Charleston’s streets seemed to be a patchwork of closures. While the Ravenel Bridge over the Cooper River was open, the James Island Expressway was closed to traffic in weather still below freezing.

Across the state, road crews continue to work to keep roads safe by spreading salt and pushing away snow.  Throughout the South, officials are warning motorists that the snow event is not over, as icy roads remain a danger.
