MORNING HEADLINES | South Carolina’s women’s basketball team smacked Texas 64-45 Sunday in Greenville to win its third consecutive Southeastern Conference title. It was the team’s ninth conference championship in its history.
Sunday’s game was the third time the teams met this year with each winning earlier at home.
“I think we needed to play a lot better than the last time that we played them and I do think we used our experience being here to our advantage,” Coach Dawn Staley told reporters. “It’s just different playing on this Sunday. And if you haven’t really experienced it, you need to experience it.”
Staley added she thought her team, ranked 5th nationally before Sunday’s win over the top-ranked Longhorns, should be first in the coming NCAA tournament brackets.
“When you win this tournament and play the schedule that we play, I do think we’re the No. 1 overall seed,” Staley told the Associated Press. “We manufactured our schedule to put ourselves in this situation. So I hope the committee doesn’t discount our entire resume.
“There isn’t anybody in the country that has played the schedule that we have played, that had a share of the regular season title, won this tournament and beat the No. 1 team in the country. … there is no one.”
