MORNING HEADLINES | After toiling in classrooms for four – or more – years, hundreds of Charleston-area college students picked up diplomas and celebrated over the weekend.
Almost 1,700 students participated in four commencement ceremonies at the College of Charleston. Some 460 graduates celebrated at Charleston Southern University, while 188 landed diplomas at the Charleston School of Law.
“Be bold, be willing to fight for what you believe in, and be proud to be a lawyer,” retired S.C. Supreme Court Justice Kaye Hearn told law school graduates during a ceremony at McAlister Fieldhouse on the Citadel campus.
Earlier this month, Trident Technical College congratulated 2,267 graduates on May 2 and about 900 Citadel students got diplomas on May 3. The Medical University of South Carolina’s graduation is set for the coming weekend.

GUN VIOLENCE: Two Dorchester Co. boys arrested for shooting that hurt one. Two boys, one 12 and the other 16, have been arrested by Dorchester County authorities for shooting one person in April. Meanwhile, one person died in a West Ashley weekend shooting.
Wet weather ahead through mid-week. Be prepared for wet weather this week as storms and thunderstorms pound the state from the coast to the Upstate. Forecasters say a slow-moving weather system will drench the South. And while they might relieve some coastal drought, they could cause flooding.
S.C. port users fear what may be ahead. Despite few impacts of tariffs on port business to date, analysts say South Carolina businesses are questioning where to go from here.
