MORNING HEADLINES  | The Town of Mount Pleasant on Tuesday celebrated the re-opening of its Shem Creek shrimp docks and processing facility just downstream from popular bars and restaurants.

A $3 million renovation began in June 2024 as a way to revitalize the area and strengthen Shem Creek’s shrimping industry. “The current facility [was] in serious need of repairs,” according to the town’s website.

“This is really a testament to our local seafood industry,” said Mount Pleasant Councilman Daniel Brownstein. “To me, this is Mount Pleasant putting its money where its mouth is and telling the world that we want to continue this industry.”

The upgrades include a widened boardwalk and pier, new electrical systems and a revitalized processing facility with a stronger structural design to withstand storms.

“It becomes a return to its former self,” said Cindy Tarvin, owner of Tarvin Seafood. “I mean it was always a processing facility for shrimpers and fishermen, and that’s what it will be again.”
