MORNING HEADLINES | The MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital in Charleston earned national recognition in six specialties in the U.S. News & World Report’s new rankings of the country’s best children’s hospitals.
“Being ranked among the top children’s hospitals nationally is a meaningful recognition of the incredible care our teams provide across all specialties,” said Dr. Mark A. Scheurer,MUSC Health’s chief of children’s and women’s services. “It not only reflects our deep commitment to improving the health and lives of children and families in South Carolina, but the Southeast as a whole.”
The hospital tied for 11th best children’s hospital in the Southeast, according to the survey. Nationally, it’s ranked, by specialty:
- No. 4: Cardiology and heart surgery
- No. 26: Nephrology
- No. 29: Orthopedics
- No. 33: Cancer
- No. 42: Gastroenterology and GI surgery
- No. 49: Neonatology
The 2025 survey is the 18th consecutive time that the cardiology and heart surgery program has made the national list. Several specialties showed improvement this year, with orthopedics jumping from unranked last year to 29th in the nation. Also: Neonatology jumped from unranked last year to No. 49; and cancer moved from No. 38 last year to No. 33 this year.

Charleston out millions of dollars in unpaid parking tickets. Since the start of 2023 through the beginning of this summer, the city of Charleston has not been paid more than $3 million in parking tickets. The unpaid fines are about 34% of the roughly 69,500 tickets handed out during the time period.
