MORNING HEADLINES | Anglican Archbishop Stephen Wood of Mount Pleasant was suspended temporarily from his ministry Sunday while dealing with reports of sexual misconduct, according to the bishop who has taken over Wood’s responsibilities. After allegations came to light last month, Wood announced earlier this month he was taking paid, voluntary leave.
Wood was accused last month in a presentment, or a list of charges compiled by church members. The presentment has not yet been made public, but an investigative report by The Washington Post said the complaint included allegations of sexual misconduct, bullying and plagiarized sermons. A second woman reportedly came forward two weeks after the initial Oct. 23 report.
Wood has denied the allegations and is submitting to a church process for vetting the claims.
More than 140 clergy in the denomination signed an open letter calling for his inhibition, a suspension from the exercise of ordained ministry. Wood is also bishop of the Diocese of the Carolinas. During his suspension, that diocese will be led by Acting Bishop David Bryan.
