MORNING HEADLINES | The Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr., who died last week, will be honored in his native state when his body will lie in state March 2 at the S.C. Statehouse, Gov. Henry McMaster announced Monday. Details are to be released soon.
The request for Jackson to lie in repose at the Statehouse was made by several state lawmakers and Jackson’s family, the governor’s office said.
He will lie in repose this week at the Chicago headquarters of his Rainbow PUSH Coalition, then travel to South Carolina and Washington, D.C., for more celebrations of his life.
“It is a great honor for Rev. Jackson and a fitting tribute to someone who really loved his state, and he said it, no matter where he went, although he challenged his state to do better,” said S.C. Sen. Darrell Jackson, D-Richland.
Jackson died Feb. 17 at the age of 84. A cause was not immediately disclosed but the latter part of life saw Jackson sidelined by a prolonged struggle with a rare brain disorder that progressively crippled him and robbed him of his booming voice.
