MORNING HEADLINES | The Pentagon is taking steps to rename Joint Base Charleston after Air Force veteran and late U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham.
Renaming the facility that’s home to a fleet of C-17 transport jets to Joint Base Lindsey Graham would honor the South Carolina Republican’s “decades of distinguished service to the United States Congress and the United States Air Force,” according to a memo signed by Air Force Secretary Troy E. Meink.
Graham spent more than six years as an Air Force lawyer on active duty and joined the U.S. Air Force Reserves in 1995, retiring in 2015.
Meanwhile today in Columbia, a public funeral service will be held at noon today in Columbia for the late senator. Graham’s remains will be buried in a private ceremony in Pickens County, where he was born and raised.
In related news, the S.C. Republican Party certified nine candidates to run in a special Aug. 11 primary for Graham’s place on the November ballot. Those who were certified include (in alphabetical order):
- Duke Buckner, a Walterboro lawyer;
- U.S. Rep. Russell Fry of Myrtle Beach;
- U.S. Sen. Darline Graham, the late senator’s sister who was appointed to fill the seat through January;
- Upstate businessman Mark Lynch;
- Former Myrtle Beach Mayor Mark McBride;
- U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman of Rock Hill;
- Glenda Gail Parker of Myrtle Beach;
- Former Gov. and U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford; and
- Samuel Shepherd of Lexington.
The winner will face the Democratic nominee, Mount Pleasant pediatrician Annie Andrews, and third-party candidates in the Nov. 3 general election.

S.C. coast under multi-day heat advisory. The National Weather Service’s Charleston office has issued a heat advisory for coastal South Carolina through at least 7 p.m. on July 29. Heat indices in Charleston and across the coast could hit 110 degrees, according to a weather alert.
Charleston launches community survey for updated Tourism Management Plan. The survey will remain open through Oct. 8 and asks residents to share feedback on topics including city services, communication and quality of life. City officials said the survey takes approximately 12 minutes to complete.
Charleston Co. schools recognized for enrollment growth. The Charleston County School District has been named in a recently released report as one of just eleven large urban districts in the country to see enrollment growth over the last eight years.
Johnson to announce running mate in North Charleston rally. Jermaine Johnson, the Democratic candidate for South Carolina governor, is expected to announce his pick for lieutenant governor this week. Meanwhile, Doors for the North Charleston rally will open at 4:30 p.m. Those interested in attending will need to RSVP.
Manilow to award Goose Creek music teacher. Grammy, Tony and Emmy award winner Barry Mainlow will perform at the North Charleston Coliseum as part of his arena tour. During the concert, he will invite Ronnie Ward, a music teacher at Westview Middle School, onstage to present an award.
