Making palmetto roses

The International African American Museum is celebrating the artistry and legacy of sweetgrass weaving and the broader traditions of Black Southern craftsmanship. This workshop invites youths and families to explore the living traditions that continue to shape the cultural landscape of the Lowcountry through crafting the iconic palmetto rose.

Musician Letourneau to perform at Vickery’s

Corinne Letourneau has a diverse musical background, and has been teaching and performing professionally for more than 20 years. Originally from North Carolina, Letourneau plays more than 100 shows every year, traveling with her band High 5.
She also teaches voice, guitar and piano at Wando High School. Catch her latest show at Vickery’s this weekend.

Intermediate crochet class

This class geared toward older teens and adults with some crochet experience will teach more advanced skills and stitches. Guided by local crochet artist Emily Enloe, participants will learn how to put these various stitches together to create their own unique crocheted items
at a slightly faster pace than the beginner class.

Marks gets top award for historic preservation

Charleston’s Richard “Moby” Marks, one of the foremost experts in historic preservation, on July 30 received the Governor’s Award, the highest honor from the S.C. Preservation Awards, for more than 40 years of work as a skilled craftsman, mentor and advocate for the city’s historic buildings.

The Faculty Lounge, a speakeasy inspired bar at 391 Huger St., has closed after 12 years in business. Co-owners Nayda and Erik Hutson also own Italian-themed Renzo, located just down the block.

Happier hour: The Ordinary now opens an hour early at 4 p.m. For the month of August, the restaurant is serving half-priced oyster sliders along with $8 spicy passionfruit Mai Tais from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. The new opening time will continue after August.

West Ashley wine: August Wines has opened at 1662 Savannah Highway. Operating hours are from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. The store offers a curated selection of wines and has an “Endless Summer Wine Club,” which features three bottles of wine with tasting notes and pairing recommendations monthly.

Cookbook dinner: Basic Kitchen and Ladybird Books are co-hosting bestselling cookbook author Serena Wolf to celebrate her new cookbook, You Do You, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 9 at the restaurant.
